With this new split water illustration series I am taking cues from a stunning photography genre that has always inspired me even though I haven't experimented with it yet.
There is something truly magical about floating half above water half under water, enjoying both the beauty of the surrounding landscape and the majesty and quiet of the underwater world. With this project I am attempting to create ocean scenes that mix elements of human activity above and under water with elements of submarine life.
The digital art shown here, featuring a group of playful dolphins swimming below the surface as a sailboat cruises peacefully nearby, is the result of my early exploration of the genre.
After initial sketching and composition on paper, I have primarily worked in Illustrator with the goal to create resolution-free vector files. While I am clearly going for semi-realism in this first scene, my intention is explore other styles such as flat, gradients or even hyper-realism.
